    Last week I addressed the issue of repentance from Luke 3, saying that those who repent show it by their fruit. But what does repentance look like? What fruit does one bear? We’ve all likely experienced the proud person who refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing. He may come to a place where he says, “I’m sorry if what I did offended you.” That’s not repentance; that’s not even an apology.

    We always hope for the possibility that when we confront someone, they will be genuinely sorry. And yet, the apostle Paul warns us against a sorrow that does not lead to repentance. In other words, sometimes people are simply sorry that they got caught, but they are not truly repentant. Paul explains the difference between “a godly grief” that “produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret,” and a “worldly grief [that] produces death.” How can we identify, and even encourage, the godly grief that leads to repentance?
